What is Sports Massage?

 The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissue during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, because of overexertion or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. Above all, it can help prevent those niggling injuries that can often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether you are an athlete, keen keep-fitter or a once a week jogger.

Sports massage is not just for the sports person: anyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs and even those with repetitive work patterns, like desk jobs

Sports massage is a deeper and more intense massage, often focusing on specific areas. It is based on the various elements of Swedish massage and often incorporates a combination of other techniques involving stretching, compression, friction, toning, and trigger point response techniques. I work deeply and instinctively using these techniques so the athlete/client can perform to their optimum with injury-free training and minimal post event injuries.

There are three areas where my treatments can be used to benefit you.

Maintenance :

By following a regular massage programme, based on your personal needs, this will help you maintain or improve your range of movement and muscle flexibility so you can continue to perform at your optimum.

Event Treatment :

Pre-event and post-event massages have specific purposes.  A pre-event treatment is used as a supplement to your warm-up, to enhance circulation and reduce excess muscle and mental tension prior to competition. It is administered to suit the needs of the athlete and his/her event.  It can be relaxing or stimulating as appropriate. 

Post-event treatment, on the other hand, is geared towards reducing the muscle spasms and metabolic build-up that occur with rigorous exercise. Various techniques I use can enhance the body’s own recovery process and this improves the athlete’s ability to return to training and competition sooner, as well as reducing the risk of injury.

Rehabilitation:

Even with preventative maintenance therapy, muscles can cramp, tear, bruise, and ache. The massage treatments I provide can speed up healing and reduce discomfort during the rehabilitation process.

These techniques are effective in the management of both acute and chronic injuries helping reduce the spasm and pain that can occur in both injured and compensatory muscles. 

In all cases, I work closely with my clients to ensure any injuries are treated effectively.

What should I expect in my treatment session?

 

On your first visit I will take you through a consultation. This is to ensure that you have no contra-indications to treatment and it gives you the opportunity to highlight any particular problem areas you wish to bring to my attention.  This consultation is used to help form your treatment plan.
